In Japan, the number of mobile phone users passed 70 million in 2002, and the mobile, or m-commerce, market is expected to expand to more than 3 trillion yen by 2006. Mobile devices are thus attracting a great deal of attention as an e-purse for both virtual and local payments.

JCB is a member of several forums such as the Mobile Payment Forum (MPF) and the Mobile IT Forum (mITF) working to standardize the mobile phone payment scheme.

JCB is also engaged in efforts to provide high value-added services utilizing the mobile phone. In fact, JCB launched a mobile phone payment service trial in corporation with other corporation with other companies in March 2003.
